Why every project is an adventure
Starting any project is like going on an adventure. I like to define ‘adventure’, per the online Oxford dictionary, as “to engage in hazardous and exciting activity, especially the exploration of unknown territory”. This is often like starting new projects - the anticipation of starting something new - it may be hazardous, it may be exciting, and usually you’re exploring some unknown territory.
You’re not sure who you’re going to meet, what specific risks will come to pass, how to deal with challenges, and how to meet your goal in the timeframe you want.
That’s where project management comes in.
A formal or semi-formal project management plan and framework will help you determine so many factors that are important to meeting your ultimate goal.
Here are a few examples:
People - who needs to be involved and what are their roles? Who needs to participate vs. stay informed? Who needs to provide input? Are they internal or external people to your business? Who is your customer?
Solution: Stakeholder mapping and Communications Plan
Planning - What is the point of what you are doing? What is the end goal? What process will you use? What are the top priorities? Which activities depend on each other?
Solution: Strategic Plan
Timeline - How long will it take?
Solution: Project mapping and schedule/timeline
Doing things ‘ad hoc’ will only get you so far - and worse, may result in wasted time, money, and effort.
