There’s no BS in “Team”

How do you solve problems within teams?

Is your team lacking cohesion?

Are you struggling with personal or team motivation to get the work done?

Teams are made up of individuals.  Each individual has different motivations, different needs, different styles, different priorities.  So how do you ensure each team member is contributing their best?  How do you motivate that person or the team when times are tough?

Let’s start with my 5-L formula of team leadership:

1.       Listen

Get to know each person on your team.

What do they care about? What’s important to them?

2.       Lean

Show you care - be genuinely interested in them - find something relatable/in common

3.       Learn

Take the time to understand where each person is coming from - how are they/can they/will they contribute to the team?

What are their challenges? What would prevent them from completing a task? What do they do best, where do they excel? What is their cultural background?

4.       Lighten

Demonstrate generosity. How can you help them? What can you do to help them solve a problem? Follow through on commitments. How can you best integrate and maximize their skills to the benefit of them and the team?

5. Lead

Get to the heart of what needs to be accomplished. Share the goals and objectives, communicate priorities and expectations, be clear and kind, hold others accountable. For yourself - commit to ongoing personal development to understand your own leadership style and opportunities.
